This move came about as Mentor Corp. persuaded the FDA that its newer silicone implants are less dangerous and even more durable than older versions. The company will employ these implants only under the following strict safety conditions approved per FDA guidlines.

- Prospective patients must sign a consent form acknowledging that they realise the risks of a silicone breast implant including the fact that they may break and require replacement or even removal.

- Mentor is only allowed to sell Silicone Breast Implants to board-certified plastic surgeons who complete a successful practical training program to learn how to insert these implants in a way that minimizes the odds of tears and breakage.

- Mentor must make and maintain a registry to track the implant patients long term results.

- Patients must be educated about the fact that if an implant breaks, the effect of the breakage occasionally does not cause immediate symptoms. Further, patients are advised to have an MRI after five years and two years thereafter to check for breakage.

- Mentor must conduct a 10 year study to determine the percentage of breast implants that will break in that time.

- The implant study must be audited by an independent committee.

- The FDA will review the results of the Mentor breast implant program in five years to verify that the implants are performing as expected.

Based on data from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 334,052 breast augmentations were performed in the United States in 2004, mostly using salt water filled implants being sold without restriction. Consumer studies predict that if the silicone breast implants return to the market, 200,000 women will visit plastic surgeons to get them in the first year. Health concerns aside, silicone implants have a more “natural” appearance and consistency than the saline version, and are therefore preferred by consumers.

Silicone-gel breast implants were first introduced in 1962 and were banned in 1992 amid health fears. Research since then has shown no statistical correlation between silicone breast implants and cancer or even rare auto-immune diseases such as lupus. A select few women will swear that their health deteriorated from the moment they received their implants, however this is anecdotal evidence. When researchers do studies comparing a large group of women with implants to an equal-sized group without them, no difference between the 2 groups is observed in the number of women with tumors or autoimmune diseases.

The most commom problem reported is formation of excess scar tissue around the breast implant due to a foreign-body reaction. If it’s localized, it can cause traction and rippling effects in the appearance of the implant. If the scar tissue entirely encircles the implant the condition is called capsular contraction. These scars can mold the implant into an unnatural rounded shape, so that the implant patient appears to have a baseball stuck under the skin on her chest. This condition develops more frequently with smooth-walled silicone implants, though it occurs to a lesser extent with saline implants as well. Implants set behind the chest muscle have a much lower incidence of this problem. As the scar tissue tends to re-form, surgeons can every now and again break the scar tissue manually. However this is proscribed by the manufacturer, as it can break the implant and void the manufacturer’s warranty. Typically, patients with breast implant contractures require follow-up surgery.

Surprisingly , the asthma drug Accolate has proven useful in preventing and even reversing capsular contraction, though months of drug treatment may be necessary.

Other possible complications include seroma (a collection of serous fluid), hematoma (blood), synmastia (breasts that pop up to be fused in the center), bottoming out (implant slides too far down the chest), double-fold ( the implant’s outline doesn’t corresspond to the natural crease of the breast), deflation (the implant breaks), tissue necrosis (localized demise of tissue) and infection.

There are a number of different approaches and techniques in use for breast enhancement surgery procedures, which differ with regard to their appropriateness for the individual dependent upon various factors including the degree of augmentation desired, body type, prior operation history, and so on. Breast augmentation surgery involves the use of implants, prostheses which are placed underneath either the mammary tissue or the muscle. There are two common types of breast implants: Silicone Implants and saline implants.

Of these two types, saline implants are the less common one, and are made of a shell made of a silicone elastomer which, after initially being implanted during the surgical procedure, is inflated with a a saline solution, containing water and salt. That saline implants are filled after insertion makes them slightly more adaptable than silicone implants. However, saline implants are considered to be appropriate only for less significant procedures. They are also slightly vulnerable to rippling, wrinkling, and other such issues, and they are thought to be more obvious to the touch compared to silicone implants, although there is some debate on this point.

Conversely, silicone implants have a silicone elastomer shell which is filled with a silicone gel of various properties. Silicone implants, like saline implants, have been around since at least the 1960s, although the nature of silicone implants has changed incrementally in the years since. The silicone implants used today are substantially different from the first generation; the gel used currently is semi-solid, which virtually eliminates the leaking issues that earlier implants, which used a liquid-like gel, were known to experience.

The surgical procedure itself can also make use of different techniques. The most commonly used method for breast enhancement surgery is the inframammary incision method. This method involves the use of an incision made in the area just below the breast, which is known as the inframammary area. The implant is inserted through this incision. The inframammary incision method involves perhaps the least risk of complications of any kind of breast augmentation operation, and the resulting scars are usually well concealed underneath the breast afterward.

An incision is made around the border of the areola in the periareolar incision method. Silicone implants cannot be used for this type of procedure, as the incision used is not big enough to accommodate them. On the other hand, this method does permit the surgeon to change the position of the breast significantly, which may be desired in some cases.

In some cases, the patient may desire the surgeon to to make the incision farther away from the breast; patients who are worried about scarring visible in the area of the breast may also request this type of method. The transaxillary incision is an incision made in the armpit area, while the transumbilical incision is an incision in the area of the belly button, which can be performed alongside a tummy tuck. In both cases, the surgeon may use an endoscope in order to assist in properly placing the implant. Saline implants are usually required for either of these procedures.

Every type of surgical procedure involves some risk, and breast augmentation is no exception. Also, following this kind of procedure, the patient will usually be required to adhere to a recovery schedule of at least six weeks, during which period strenuous exercise and other physical activity is to be avoided in order to ensure that the procedure is successful in the end.

Special X-ray views can be taken to minimize this interference. Most women have some degree of asymmetry between breasts and breast augmentation may occasionally exaggerate this difference. A breast that has an underlying implant will not necessarily feel like a normal breast, and some women may be acutely aware of the implant as a foreign body within the breast.

Men: How do you honestly feel about breast implants? ?

I am getting them next week. I know A LOT of men who are against them. I’m only going up to about a C cup. I am also getting the most natural feeling and looking kind that there is. People tell me that I should just love my body the way it is, blah blah blah. Well, I had cancer so one of my breasts are non-existent and the other is only an A cup.

Post Op tummy tuck… need advice about seroma?

20 days post op for breast implants, tummy tuck, and lipo. A few days ago, I sneezed a few times and felt a small tearing sensation in my upper abdomen. The pain lasted a few minutes. 1. Should I continue to wear my binder?

How To Lose Weight Now: Does Hypnosis Work For Weight Loss?

Hypnosis conjures up images of a bearded man with piercing black eyes and a mesmerizing deep voice swinging a pendulum back and forth, chanting, “You are getting very sleeeeepy.” Hypnosis is terribly misunderstood and the only exposure to hypnosis most people will ever have is a Las Vegas stage show. But stage hypnosis for entertainment and hypnotherapy for behavior change are completely different animals. Could “real” hypnotherapy help you get leaner?

I’ve wondered the same thing myself for decades, since I first started bodybuilding.

Any seasoned coach can tell you that which diet or training program you follow is irrelevant if you can’t follow it consistently. Many of the problems such as non-compliance, self-sabotage, inconsistency and lack of motivation are mind problems, not body problems.

One misconception about hypnosis is the fear that you’ll lose command of your faculties during a session or that it’s some kind of “mind control.” This is not true to any greater degree than your family, friends, peers or culture have “controlled” your mind.

The fact is, the mind is amenable to suggestion, (especially the mind of a very young child), and in that sense everything is hypnosis. Reading the newspaper or watching TV is hypnosis or “mental programming” in one sense. You get “programmed” by societal norms to become one of the masses, unless you make a choice to be different and become what you want to be.

Another source of misconceptions about hypnosis comes from stage hypnosis, which has virtually nothing to do with hypnotherapy for personal change. The stage hypnotist intentionally ferrets out the most susceptible individuals in his audience – who happen to be willing participants – and then induces some hypnotic phenomenon for entertainment value.

Hypnosis, as used in personal change work, is simply a relaxed state of altered consciousness and heightened focus where the conscious mind gets out of the way, allowing a message from the hypnotherapist to reach your subconscious more easily. When your subconscious gets the message, it stimulates positive behaviors, so hypnosis is simply a tool for behavior change.

Self hypnosis (by yourself), is as simple as taking long, deep breaths, getting relaxed (sometimes using progressive muscle relaxation techniques), then doing your visualization or repeating affirmations, or even listening to your own home-made affirmations tape.

Many people report great success with hypnosis, but others do not. The mixed results probably have to do with the practitioner, and some with the subject. What kind of results can you expect from hypnosis? Could hypnosis help you lose weight or change your body in other ways?

How You Think and Your Body

I believe that there is a mind-body link and that it’s entirely possible that the brain, central nervous system and subconscious mind can literally “talk” to the various cells of your body and that this may be a factor in healing from illnesses. I believe that the body is a remarkable self-healing machine and its own natural pharmacy.

I think it’s pretty difficult to prove, but being that a legitimate science exists on this subject (it’s called psychoneuroimmunology), the scientific community seems to think enough of the mind-body connection to spend time, money and resources to formally investigate it. There are many exciting and plausible theories. We also have the placebo effect to consider, where a belief can affect biology in truly amazing ways.

That said, when it comes to hypnosis, I think you should view it with an eye of caution as well as interest. First and foremost, and perhaps exclusively, you should see hypnosis as a tool to change behavior. When you look at a claim made for hypnosis, you should ask yourself whether that claim is a result that can be achieved through a change in your behavior.

For example, if someone promotes hypnosis for muscle growth, is it possible that your behavior might change in a way that you gain more muscle? The answer is yes. The hypnosis might help you change your eating habits, and you might just push yourself harder in the gym. Therefore, the muscle growth occurs as a result of behavior change – eating better and training harder – rather than the hypnosis itself.

It’s the same with body fat reduction: Will hypnosis magically increase your metabolism from a mind body connection? While I like to keep an open mind, I seriously doubt it and I’m not too enthused about hypnotherapists who say they will hypnotize you and your metabolism will speed up. If it can happen, I’m not sure it will ever be provable using the scientific method, so it may ultimately come down to your will to believe the claims.

So, could hypnosis help with breast enlargement? Well, maybe. A thought might bubble up from your subconscious mind that it’s a good idea to save up your money, go visit the doctor, and fork over the three grand for implants (sarcasm intended).

Guys, I could give the same warning about hypnosis for enlargement of your…. uh… your amount of hair… yeah, hair growth, that’s it… watch out for those hair growth hypnosis claims. I’m not so sure I believe them (grin).

What about weight loss?

Although the results are not definitive, there’s some clinical psychology research that’s been published in peer reviewed journals which shows successful results from hypnosis for weight loss. In part 2 of this series, you’ll hear more about what those studies found.

Even more eye-opening in my view are some of the documented cases of medical hypnosis, which range from simple pain relief from dental work to surgery without anesthesia (which is pretty freaky if you think about it). The mind does affect the body.

In my opinion, hypnosis sessions or hypnosis CD’s can be a valuable adjunct to a comprehensive fitness, nutrition and lifestyle program for some people, if you get them from a reputable and skilled hypnotherapist.

Even better, I believe the ideal type of session would include conscious coaching and education as well as traditional hypnosis, not just a passive situation where you listen and expect your mind to be positively “programmed.”

Then again, I think this is why weight loss hypnosis CDs sell like gangbusters, because they’re often sold under the pretense that you do absolutely nothing. Just listen and get slim – the perfect “quick fix.”

I don’t think it’s that simple or easy. You have to accept responsibility for change, take an active role in creating change and have a bias for action if you really want to be successful. You have to work on the physical and mental plane simultaneously not just “think positive” or rely on self help CD’s of any kind.

So while I DO believe hypnosis can be a valuable tool, at the end of the day, programming your mind for success all boils down to what you say to yourself (and see/read/listen to), most of the time. You can’t work with a hypnotherapist every day for the rest of your life, but you do talk to yourself non stop every single day, and repetition is a proven way to condition the mind.

The way you talk to yourself, most of the time, IS “hypnosis” if you think about it… it’s self-hypnosis.

If you already have a structured training and nutrition plan, like Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle, but you’re having challenges with the behavior change side of things, I hypnosis or positive mental programming CD’s might be worth trying as an additional tool in your “mental training” took kit.

Just remember that in the long run, you are your own best hypnotherapist and when it comes to the claims, let the buyer beware.

Silicone refers to a group of polymers, based upon the element silicon. Sand (Silicon dioxide (Sio2)) is one of the most abundant compounds on earth. The polymer utilized medically is poly-dimethylsiloxane (PDMS).

Silicones were first widely utilized in the World War II era for industrial and military application. Medical applications for silicone were quickly identified and silicone products are commonplace within the medical industry today. Common silicone containing products include indwelling catheters, extended wear contact lenses, pacemakers, syringes, and pharmaceuticals. Silicone products include industrial and medical grade materials. Medical grade refers to material that is pure and consistent in composition. Silicone is classified as a medical device meaning that silicone does not achieve its primary intended purpose by chemical action or through its metabolism. Characteristics of silicone that are favorable for medical uses include thermal and oxidative stability; chemical and biological inertness; hydrophobic nature; and sterilization capability.

Silicone polymers may be produced in a variety of forms including oil, gels, or elastomers (rubber). The physical state is determined by the degree of chemical cross-linking. Cross-linking occurs between vinyl and hydrogen groups on silicon atoms. Silicone oils are straight chains of PDMS without cross-linking and are insoluble in water. PDMS will remain in liquid form indefinitely. Silicone gels consist of cross-linked (of various degree) PDMS chains together with variable amounts of PDMS liquid. It is important to keep in mind that the majority of silicone gel is silicone oil within the confines set by the PDMS gel matrix. The ratio of silicone liquid to gel is controlled by manufactures to control the viscosity of the gel. Elastomers of silicone have high degrees of cross-linking and almost no PDMS oil. Breast implant shells, both silicone and saline filled, consist of a vulcanized silicone elastomer that is reinforced with silica for increased strength.1 In an effort to reduce gel bleed from silicone filled devices, phenyl or triflouropropyl groups are bonded to the shell to decrease the shell permeability to PDMS oil.2,3 These “low bleed” implant shells with “barrier coating” are characteristic of current 3rd ,4th and 5th generation implants

Is it possible to get breast implants while you are still lactating? I can’t find any info on it.?

My breasts have suffered from breast feeding. I am still lactating but I want to wean my child and get implants. Will the fact that I am still producing milk make a difference? I want to do it in a couple of weeks since my husband and mom happen to have the same 2 week vacation time, and they will be able to help me out. It will be next year before they have vacation time again. I have an appt on mon. but I was looking on the internet and can’t find any info about it.
