Breast Implant Surgery Triples Among Teens

High school graduates are no longer getting cars and tuition assistance as graduation gifts—they’re getting boob jobs.

From 2002 to 2003, the amount of girls ages 18 and younger who receive Breast Implants nearly tripled: from 3,872 to a whopping 11,326, reports the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Experts believe that the driving force of this huge increase is reality television.

Shows like, “Extreme Makeover,” “The Swan,” and “I Want a Famous Face,” have sparked an interest in plastic surgery among today’s teenagers. As these girls realize it’s acceptable and applaudable to alter their bodies permanently, more and more teens are braving the scalpel.

There is currently no prohibition against performing implant surgery on patients younger than age 18, yet some surgeons may be unwilling to perform the procedure because girls may be still developing. In some special cases, plastic surgeons will perform surgery on girls whose one breast is noticeably larger than the other; or for an older teenager who has no sign of breast development.

Critics argue that these teens are obsessed with their looks and are too young to understand the permanent implication of surgery, including the associated risks and long-term maintenance.

Like other surgeries, breast implant procedures pose the possibility of bleeding, swelling and infection. In addition, teenage girls whose breast muscles have yet to be stretched will likely feel more soreness than older breast enhancement patients.
