I’m Jewish and recently got a tattoo and my mom flipped….?
I wasn’t originally going to tell her, I mean I am 20 years old, I’m a big girl, but I started to feel guilty because we pretty much share everything. Now I’m completely regretting it. She told me she wished I hadn’t, that I’ve irreparably damaged our relationship, and that I may as well have stabbed her in the heart. I thought she might not be happy with it, but I had no idea that she was going to be so offended and take it like I meant it as a direct hit against Judaism. It’s not like we’re Orthodox, and she knows that I don’t practice Judaism anymore anyways. We don’t keep kosher, we don’t do Shabbat, and our family has barely gone to temple in the last four years, if at all. It’s just that she was a Hebrew school teacher for like six years and converted to Judaism when she married my dad. And for goodness sake, she’s the one who spent $4000 on breast implants three years ago! My tattoo cost $70! Am I wrong here? How do I talk to her about this?
Maybe your mother knows the Jewish Law against tattoos (permanent markings) comes from this verse: “You shall not make gashes in your flesh for the dead, or incise any marks on yourselves: I am the Lord” (Leviticus 19:28), or maybe she sees it as a disfigurement. Some moms (regardless of faith) don’t even like their childrens’ hair to be cut, and have to get used to the idea.
Maimonides, a 12th century Jewish scholar explained the prohibition against tattoos originated as a way for Jews to distance ourselves from paganism. The markings were used by other religions ritualistically to call or invoke names of false gods. This could be a drag if they actually do follow you around. I guess one could pray a blessing to make sure it was ok.
Some Jewish cemeteries don’t allow people with tattoos to be buried there for this reason (idolatry, collecting sheddim). The exception is an unwilling tattoo such as from one of the death camps in the Holocaust. I think these prohibitions are relaxing, however. Some young Jewish people are getting Hebrew tattoos that wouldn’t be calling down bad energies.
Some of the dyes may not be kosher as well.
That said, you didn’t know, and it should not stand between you and your mother.
When someone is upset it is best to just listen to their feelings non judgmentally (none of this am I wrong/right, and isn’t she wrong). Then when she calms down, you might point out that you didn’t know her beliefs, and you’re sorry to have upset her so.
